I was inspired to read the novel, The Freedom Writers, after watching the film a few years back. I really connected with the message of the movie, that one shouldn’t judge someone by where they come from. Throughout the movie, the students are reading their journal entries, telling their stories to the audience. It was one of my favorite things about the movie, and I wanted to read more of the journal entries, which are found in the novel. The book was created by the teacher and her students portrayed in the movie, so their stories are real. As I was reading the novel, I could relate to their stories so much. I also enjoyed the entries the teacher would write as well, as she depicts the experiences the students and her have in the classroom. I am just amazed that a teacher was able to have such a substantial impact on her students, changing their character and motivation for education.
